Not a guide, but hopefully with everyones advice it can be.

I have a few scratches in the paintwork on the roof that have bubbled and need attention. Whats the best way going forward to fix them? Sand then with some sand paper, blow dust off with compressed air and then primer? Repeat process a fe times then paint?

Or use that stuff that converts rust into not rust, and then paint?

Hi Simon

Congratulations on the vehicle.

When assessing rust you need to know whether it's coming from the inside or outside.  I would definitely treat it, have a look at this company, I've used the Hydrate 80 so far which is easy to use.  I don't have long term knowledge of it though:

I bought a pretty good looking Haynes book recently purely on bodywork, I think I found it here:

I would give it a good rub down with emery paper, treat the rust with Kurust & then fill any dips & holes with body filler, rub down smooth, give it a good few coats of red oxide primer, rub down with fine wet & dry paper & respray the area with aerosol paint to match the original colour.
You will be lucky if you can find the original colour, what i do is to use T-cut to remove the dull paint & get back to the original colour, then try to find the closest match.

I'll get some Kurust and try that as it seems to do the same as Hydrate 80, and comes in smaller pots. It does say it doesn't need to be primer or undercoat though, so i guess i can treat the spot, sand and repeat and then spray paint over the top.

Should i polish up the paintwork around it first to get a better idea of the colour to allow an easier match?

I also have a large rusty patch below the front bumper on the drivers side. It's pretty bad with a hole in it. What would be the best way of fixing/treating that? I'm guessing for it to be fully replace, but it seem that the front of the van is all one piece?

I weld in new metal or a good s/h valence if you want it done. I can leave it in primer or spray it the correct colour.

Hi Derek

What kind of cost would that be? If i brought it to you would you be able to have a look at the wheel arches and the bottom of the panel doors too, as that is where the rust seems to be as well (although not as bad as the front bit).

I've sent you a message on this forum as you seem to be the source of parts and expertise here.

Ive nearly finished refubishing the underside of my van, it is pretty solid and only had surface rust on it. I cleaned it all up and gave it a coat of cure rust, followed by two coats of white Smooth Right  Smiley Bloody hard and messy work but it gives you a solid foundation to work up from, I need my wheel arches looking at aswel. One minor thing I need for the underside is the Wire hanger for the spare wheel, mine had rotted into two pieces. My front arches have been repaired and are solid but are unsightly and I will eventually replace them with the correct panels.
