Should my clutch be very noisey?  when sitting with the engine running but in natural  I get a loud sound like sandpaper rubbing against metal in time with the engine revs which increases as I rev the engine, if I disengage the clutch it disappears, when I engage a gear the noise comes back. Mary`s van does not make the same noise. is my clutch on the way out? fitted new by Derek under a year ago.

Any ideas

I reckon you are right JJ, Thrust bearing on it's way out.
In fifth gear most of the 'older' Rascals whine quite a bit, you can live with that, but the thrust bearing really needs looking at before it packs up completely as well as make a mess .

Is the thrust bearing something that would be put in with a new clutch as this has been like this since i picked it up from Derek and he had put a new clutch in when I bought it from him

Please excuse my mechanical ignorance but this thrust bearing you are talking about is this the clutch release bearing?

Hi guys i believe it is just the noise of a worn gearbox..if it was the thrust bearing it would only make the noise as you press the clutch pedal ...its a worn gearbox but dont worry mine has been like that for nearly two years and still going strong...noisy but strong......and yes tony its otherwise known as the clutch release bearing....CHOP

I have exactly the same problem on my van; Silent when you push the clutch in and noisey as you like when you release the clutch in neutral.  According to the haynes manual and my local mechanic it's my input shaft bearing (is that the same as the thrust bearing?).  It's been like it since I've had the van (2 years) and has never casued any problems apart from sounding a bit rough so don't panic.

Yes, it did have a new clutch release bearing fitted [thrust bearing]. I only fit three piece clutch kits comprising: Friction plate/pressure plate/thrust bearing. Supplied & fitted £135.00.
It is the gearbox bearing that is wearing. They go on for years just being noisy.
Rebuilt gearboxes are £150.00 plus £60.00 to fit. Derek.

So that begs the question Derek, why did you not replace the noisy gearbox bearing when you did the refurb including new  clutch? because it has been like that since I bought it from you.

Hope you were both having a laugh, when I paid £1300 for the van I was told it was a re-furbed van,and it has not just gone like it, it was like it from when I got it from you Derek,I just thought it was normal. That and only having 2 wheel nuts on each wheel that was only noticed because I said I did not want the wheel covers, painting over the mud under the wheel arches so when I washed it for the first time I had a red and white striped van and a few other things that I wont mention on mine and on Mary`s van makes me wonder what else is lurking.
