Does anyone have any advice/experience on replacing the standard pillar-mounted radio aerial with something else?

My lower mounting hole is corroded, so I thought I'd investigate the Other Options before just repairing it and fitting another aerial.

Hello Robin, The hole will be welded up & a new matching aerial installed as part of the weld repairs so dont drill any more holes in it. Derek.

Robin.. Don't know whether you saw my repair at the rally in May, I didn't want to go welding on the upright close to all that rubber and glass. I made some makeup plates from aluminium and screwed them to the good bits of the upright. I took a bit of time to bend the ally by just tapping lightly with a hammer so the curvature of the plates matched the upright and used silicone under each plate just to make it watertight. The plates are a bit of a "feature" and I got to keep the original aerial. I keep my van in a garage and cannot accommodate an aerial on the roof !

I will send your some detail pictures of what I did.. you don't need to be an engineer to do this ..

I did notice the 'feature' - I was just interested to know if anyone had replaced the aerial with some other/better kind - this is the second one I've had (had to replace the first one after an incident in a multistorey carpark in Newport), and was keen to know if I should be getting one of those 'shark fin' ones or something.

The van is parked on the drive and the aerial is a little vulnerable to stray footballs - at least until I replace the manhole cover with one I can drive over, then I can park beside the house  Smiley

I have the same problem and also need to replace by aerial so was wondering the best way to proceed with getting it looked at.

The other option would be to mount a small aerial on the door mirror mounts.
