DOES ANYONE KNOW A GENEOLOGIST???

Yup, I know, I spelled it wrong... but I have heard that quite a few people like tracing family history for fun... I looked into getting a professional, but they want hundreds of quids.
If anyone knows of somebody that likes to do it as a hobby, then I would be truly grateful.

Titch.... Bless, Thanks for the link, but I am trying to find my father.
It took me years and years to trace my mother, and today I got a letter from her in reply to one I sent asking who my dad is.
Turns out it was a brief encounter... ( very brief I think)
His name is Charlie Harris and he was a gypsy traveller....
Would you bloody believe it?
Well anyway, I want to try and find him.... I must have brothers and/ or sisters and I need to find them.
So I want to find somebody who is clever with public records, tho I doubt that there will be too much recorded to be fair.
You might think it's weird me writing this on the forum, but I have been leaving messages everywhere on sites in the hopes that someone may see one and try to answer.
I am a member of genes reunited... but can't find anything there.
All a bit mad really, but I am determined to find out.
Maybe if I can find the right C.  Harris, I can look at old parish records to go back further.

OK Jenxy, it was just a thought...
Maybe finding out exactly where the name Hassis comes from will give a clue, although that's going back a few generations too far really.
I've often thought all this sort of thing is interesting, your case as well!

Hello Jen, My wife & I foster children & sometimes I think it is better to let sleeping dogs lie. Some of the parents of the kids we`ve had have been a great dissappointment to there children. My Great Uncle who came from Canada {he was Chief Scientific Adviser to the Canadian govt.] researched my family in the 1970`s after he retired. The consistency in our family history was illegitimacy & there was my big sister sitting there having had my nephew in 1963 on her own, in a bedsit & out of wedlock whilst he told us this. BUT, if you feel there is something lacking in your life, go for it. In our family there was an infamous child murder by an older sister in the 1880`s which caused the family name to be changed to avoid the stigma. This murder has been the subject of books, T.V. programmes & a film. It wasn`t until a few years ago, not long before she died my mother told me she had had an older brother who,aged 28, committed suicide. I had always believed she was an only child. Strange things happened in my maternal family causing my Granny & mum to run away to London from rural Wiltshire, with my Granny deserting her husband in the late 1930`s. I don`t know what happened & my mum wouldn`t ever tell me.
So,though you will find the geneology, you may not find the reasons for relationships & actions  that family took & may turn up skeletons that you would prefer to let lie.
It`s all interesting but may open doors you may wish you had left closed. Derek.

most gypsy travellers i know/knew spent most of there life not giving there real names ..you will have a real job on your hands there jen...i know a gypsy who travels around and he has at least three different families...scatterd about...it will be a nightmare jen...the best of luck.....have you tried the DNA project things....click on this jen...

Thanks for the answers.... Derek, I know I am opening up a massive can of worms, but I have to know. Have spent my whole life wondering how different things might have been if I had my own family instead of being the cuckoo in someone elses nest, so I have to try as hard as possible no matter where the road leads.
After the letter I recieved the other day, not much could shock me now.
Chop, I did look at something like that, but I really need to know `i have the right name, not only was he capable of giving her the wrong name, but she is also very capable of lying through her teeth... sad but true, so before I send loads of cash winging in the Harris direction, I have to find one more timy piece of proof.
I know he was married to someone else at the time, I believe this woman filed for divorce when I was about 6 months old. I need to find a C. Harris that divorced between 1966-69.
That's why I am hoping to find someone who has done this kind of thing before. I have quite a logical brain, but need someone to point me in the right direction.
I will let yall know how I go with it.

Jen,
all registry offices, by county, will have this sort of details you are starting at, i.e. divorce & the registration of your birth, this will give you the closer dates.
It's being sure which county firstly.

Hi jenxy,i am now 48 years,back in 1978 i started looking for my natural mother much to my foster mothers discust. i backed off until i was married the first time in 1985 and proceeded again full on,i know my mothers maiden name (samualson) scottish i believe and then her married name so i went to our state library in melbourne australia and went through all of the state records under the maiden name.freedom of information.after much research i had all the places where samualsons lived.wrote letters and rang people .we have an adoption agency in melbourne and when i gave them all the info i had they found my mum,we met shed lots of tears of joy and had a ball,still do.the adoption agency gave me some written info of past adoptees with good and not so good stories.i should/will write a book on this one day....al the best and keep an open mind...ken
